Inebriation and Mysticism within Oriental and Occidental Cultures. A critical Appraisal of Rudolf Gelpke’s Comparative Approach.
Rudolf Gelpke (1928-1972) was a Swiss scholar of Islamic studies and a drug researcher. He belonged to the circle of early psychonauts around the chemist Albert Hofmann with whom he was on friendly terms. In my paper I will analyse some basic concepts and lines of argumentation that Gelpke developed in his major work “Vom Rausch im Orient und Okzident” (1966).
